Queen's Gold

Hal Thompson is a pretty ordinary guy. A widower who owns his own small travel agency, he’s doing his best to raise his two nearly adult children alone. When they convince him to undergo a hypnotic past-life regression, he is unimpressed that his “memories” reveal the hiding place of ancient Aztec gold. Other people, however, take it very seriously, and when his family is threatened, Hal is forced into a wild chase across Mexico and into the blood-soaked memories of his past life as a soldier in Hernan Cortes’ sixteenth century army. Aided by a pretty Mexican airline attendant, Hal pits himself against the rugged volcanic terrain and a host of murderous black marketeers to find the gold before it claims more lives.

"Queen's Gold" is a real page-turner and has something for everybody.  Set against the background of New Mexico and the old Aztec territory in Mexico, it has love, an ancient murder, revenge, danger, spectacular scenery well-described, and of course the hunt for the "Queen's Gold." It moves right along and kept this reader, at least, truly hooked. It also has believable characters, some likable and some - well, not. The background of a past life regression is original and whether you believe in reincarnation or not, it makes sense within this novel, which deals with connections between lifetimes of 500 years ago and people in the present. As a side note, if you are looking for a good yarn to give your teenager, this could be it - it contains none of the crudeness so common in books these days but does have two nice and normal teenage characters who are intrinsic to the plot. A word of warning here - don't start this book at bedtime - you are likely to turn those pages until the morning rooster crows. Thelma Freedman, IBRT

The plot is fast and the characters are credible and yield just enough curiosity and willingness to make this one heck of a great adventurous yarn. Great summer reading or for any other season! So relax and get ready to explore the amazing, awesome wonders of past lives! Viviane Crystal

I just love discovering new-for-me writers! Melissa has put together a tale that will satisfy most everyone. It's especially gratifying to read a story where such great character development blends flawlessly with the story. Keep it up, Melissa!

The Appaloosa Connection

When Ross Garvey's prized Appaloosa is stolen from his Colorado ranch, he fully intends to hunt down the thieves in their New Mexico hideout and regain his best broodmare. What he doesn't count on is bull-headed, fifteen year old Jaimie Callahan, whose horse was also stolen by the same thieves. And he certainly does not anticipate the beautiful Mexican girl who's dealing with the thieves, nor the fact that an entire company of Mexican troops is in on the deal!

Here is a fast-moving adventure, not only filled with many heart-pulsing moments of plausible action but a fascinating gallery of fully-rounded and highly engaging characters. Ross Garvey is the young Colorado rancher hero, whose prize Appaloosa is stolen; Jaimie Callahan, the spirited fifteen-year-old heroine, who insists on accompanying him to hunt down the thieves; Ash Callahan (who is seeking revenge) and his young accomplice, Sonny Wilke, the villains. (I give nothing away here. The identities of the thieves are revealed on page 13). The author not only knows her Old West terrain as intimately as the lines on her hand, but she can describe the country with such an engrossing relish of fascinating details, that the rough-hewn border land that Mexico didn't want becomes as three-dimensional as the memorable principals themselves. At first the plot seems to be moving in a fast but pretty straightforward manner, but author Melissa Bowersock has plenty of surprises in store as the plot twists and turns towards its unexpected but satisfying conclusion.
